Before looking at the different types of bearded dragons, let us first of all look at what bearded dragons are.

The scientific name for bearded dragon is pogona. It is a genre of lizards comprising of 7 classes. The phrase bearded dragon is mainly used to denote the Central Bearded Dragon. Bearded dragons are lizards that are commonly found in Australia. They reside in rocky and parched areas of the country. The animal is characterized by its huge triangular head, sharp edges on the sides of the body as well as a flat body. Bearded dragons are cold blooded animals that feed on both meat and vegetation (i.e. omnivorous). Young bearded dragons mainly feed on insects. But as they mature, they begin to feed on vegetation before moving to meat.

What are the different types of bearded dragons?

The different types of bearded dragons differ from one another in terms of color, size, appearance and behavior. In addition to the different species found in various pet stores, there are also numerous other species found in the wild.

Inland bearded dragon

The inland bearded dragons are also commonly referred to as central bearded dragons. This is a type of bearded dragon that is mainly found within the pet community. When individuals refer to bearded dragons in magazines, books, online or pet shops, they are basically referring to the inland bearded dragon. Or else, they will have additional information in regards to the type of bearded dragon they would like to have.
Inland bearded dragons were initially discovered in Australia’s mainland. Today, they are found in the coastal regions and southern parts of Australia.

It’s quite possible for one to have an inland bearded dragon as a pet as they can easily be bred in captivity and still thrive as they would have in the wild. Inland bearded dragons are characterized by the spots on the base of their neck. This characteristic is only evident in inland bearded dragons.

Coastal bearded dragons

This type of bearded dragon is commonly found on the coastal regions of Australia (i.e. East and South Coast). The coastal bearded dragons are not a common sight in the pet community as is the case with inland bearded dragons. They bear the same features as inland bearded dragons. The only difference is the color. Coastal bearded dragons have dull and darker colors. In addition, they do not have typical spots on the neck.

Rankin bearded dragon

This type of bearded dragon is mainly located in the Central and Western regions of Australia. As is the case with coastal bearded dragons, Rankin dragons are not easily found in the pet community.

Western Bearded Dragon

Western bearded dragons are smaller than other types of bearded dragons (they can grow to a maximum of 15 inches). They are commonly found on the southwest coast of Australia and central deserts. Its color is also a little bit different (it’s more like a chameleon).
